BSA Releases 5 Decisions

The Authority has not upheld a complaint that use of the Māori phrase ‘kore puta’ (following the English phrase ‘not out’) onscreen during a Super Smash Cricket match breached the offensive and disturbing content standard. The complaint alleged the word ‘puta’ was highly offensive due to its different meaning in other languages such as Spanish and Portuguese. The BSA found that in the context of a NZ domestic cricket match, with the previous phrase onscreen ‘decision pending’ also translated in te reo, it was clear ‘puta’ was being used as a te reo translation for ‘out’, and the Authority did not need to consider what it may mean in other languages. This and other recent decisions can be seen here.
