Eight new decisions released today
Today we released decisions on eight complaints, three of which were upheld.
One of the upheld complaints related to a broadcaster’s use of social media content during a news item about a bus crash that occurred near Gisborne on Christmas Eve. The item featured photographs of some of the crash victims taken from a public Facebook page for the Tongan community. The Authority noted that where social media content is re-published on another platform, privacy considerations should be considered afresh, particularly in sensitive circumstances. The Authority is currently undertaking research into the public’s, and broadcasters’, views on privacy and social media, and we hope this research will give further guidance to broadcasters and the public on the issues raised in this case.
