According to the organisers, the fair was intended to change people’s perception of erotica being sleazy and to present it as mainstream. Dennis Walker complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the broadcast promoted the sex industry as a viable lifestyle and that TVNZ was irresponsible in screening such material. In his view, all aspects of the sex industry degraded women. In its response, TVNZ noted that the broadcast had taken a "light-hearted look" at the trade fair....

Summary The film "Striptease" which starred Demi Moore and Burt Reynolds was screened at 8. 30pm on TV2 on 31 January 1999. Kristian Harang complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the film, which depicted a woman with naked breasts during a striptease act, was offensive and unsuitable for younger viewers. He also claimed that the film was of no social or educational value. TVNZ advised Mr Harang that it did not consider that the broadcast had breached norms of decency and taste. The broadcaster also maintained that it had been mindful of the effect of the programme on children because it had assigned the film an AO classification and had preceded its broadcast with an explicit warning. Summary A stripper exposed her breasts in a scene during a strip show in Heartbeat broadcast on TV One on 18 November 1998 at 2. 10pm. Ms Hutchings complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the content was inappropriate in a programme which had been classified PGR and was broadcast during the afternoon. She argued that it was unsuitable viewing for children, and that it perpetuated stereotypical views about women, thus breaching several broadcasting standards. In its response, TVNZ acknowledged that the material was more suited to an adult audience, but maintained that it was not unsuitable for younger viewers when under the guidance of an adult. It did not consider it had been incorrectly classified. Further, TVNZ argued, the content did not breach any broadcasting standards, given its context in a drama clearly classified as PGR.
