The programme broadcast on Sunday 26 October 2003 included a message encouraging listeners to buy products from a named wine and beer shop. [2] Vijaykumar Patel complained to Wellington Access Radio that the broadcast breached the standards restricting the promotion of liquor. The coverage included shots of the successful team in its changing room after the match. On GALA’s behalf, Mr Turner complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the shots from the changing room included liquor advertising signage. As such signage breached the NZ Sports Assembly Voluntary Sports Code, he maintained that it contravened the Programme Standards. While accepting that the Voluntary Sports Code might have been breached, TVNZ said it had been unaware of the signage until it was filming in the changing room. It began and finished with a 5 second sponsorship credit and included another sponsorship credit and a 30 second liquor advertisement. Liquor promotions comprised 45 seconds of the break. GALA’s Complaints Secretary, Cliff Turner, complained to Television New Zealand Ltd that four liquor promotions in one commercial break constituted saturation in contravention of the standards. Pointing out that the liquor promotions were not sequential and amounted in total to only 45 seconds of a break which lasted 4 minutes and 15 seconds, TVNZ did not accept that the promotions amounted to saturation. Dissatisfied with TVNZ’s decision, Mr Turner on GALA’s behalf referred the complaint to the Broadcasting Standards Authority under s. 8(1)(a) of the Broadcasting Act 1989....

SummaryA music video entitled "Smack my Bitch up" was broadcast at about 10. 30pm on Havoc on the closedown show of MTV on 7 June 1998. Ms MacKay of Wellington complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster of MTV, that the video breached several broadcasting standards because of its portrayal of sexual violence, its exploitation of women and its promotion of contemptuous treatment of women. In its response, TVNZ argued that contextual factors, such as the time of day of the broadcast and the intended audience, were relevant when assessing this complaint. In reaching its conclusion that no standards were breached, it maintained that there was no glamorisation of the exploitation of women nor any aspect which demeaned or represented women as inherently inferior. It argued that the main character’s behaviour was seen as unacceptable, and therefore there was no breach of the good taste standard....
