The Authority has not upheld a complaint that a news bulletin on The Breeze about United States President Donald Trump’s social media post saying he was ‘glad’ Robert Mueller died, breached the accuracy and fairness standards. The complainant alleged the omission of Trump’s full post created a misleading and unfair impression of what he said. The Authority found the newsreader’s summary of Trump’s response was accurate, the post was correctly attributed, and the choice to include or not include the full post was at the editorial discretion of the broadcaster. SummaryA Millennium Baby Competition was the title of a promotion run by radio station 91ZM in Auckland. It focused on the first child to be born on 1 January 2000. Mr Ensoll complained to the broadcaster that the title of the promotion was incorrect as, he said, the next Millennium was due to begin on 1 January 2001. The Radio Network of New Zealand Ltd, as operators of 91ZM, declined to uphold the complaint on the basis the world intended to celebrate the new Millennium on 1 July 2000 regardless of the technical correctness of the date. The programme included an interview with Opposition Leader Christopher Luxon, where the presenter read Luxon a series of words the public associated with him. The Authority has not upheld a complaint about comments made by Jack Tame during his morning show including the statement ‘Māori don’t just deserve special treatment, but are contractually guaranteed a form of special treatment under the Treaty’. The Authority has not upheld a complaint that an item covering the Electricity Authority’s new trading rule breached the accuracy and fairness standards. The item was materially accurate, given its focus was the introduction of a new trading rule, motivated in part to address an undesirable trading situation (associated with Meridian Energy’s actions). Summary A reduction in unemployment levels was illustrated by use of a graph in a news item broadcast on One Network News on 4 November 1999 between 6. 00–7. 00pm. Mr Kammler complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the visual message of the graph was distorted because the vertical axis had not started at zero. As a result, he said, the decline in the unemployment level appeared to be greater than it actually was. In his view the item had not reflected the truth. TVNZ acknowledged Mr Kammler’s argument, but said it was necessary to see the graph in its television context, where its function was to convey a stylistic indication of a trend, rather than being very specific information – such as in a written text – which could be referred back to later....

The Authority has not upheld two complaints about a broadcast of The Panel which briefly discussed public perception of the recognition of a Palestinian state and the panellists’ views on whether Aotearoa New Zealand should sanction Israel. The complaints were made under several standards and included claims the broadcast was unbalanced for not including comment from Palestinians ‘or directly affected individuals’, and treated Palestinians unfairly. Additionally, a panellist’s comment was said to be inaccurate and misleading, and to discriminate against and denigrate Palestinians. Under the balance standard, the Authority found alternative perspectives were provided by the other panellist. In addition, the broadcast: was clearly signalled as approaching the topics canvassed from the panellists’ perspectives; was narrowly focussed on certain aspects of the much larger, complex Israel-Palestine conflict; and listeners were likely to be aware of significant viewpoints given the issues had been frequently covered in a range of media....
