SummaryIn a segment of Target which was broadcast on TV3 on 19 September 1999 beginning at 7. 00pm, viewers were advised how to remove graffiti from a variety of surfaces when "little parliamentarians" had been naughty. The graffiti which was removed included a number of messages couched in schoolyard language such as "Jenny and Winston 4 eva", "Jenny © Timberlands", and "Jenny and Timberlands up a tree L. O. G. G. Summary In reporting the New Zealand cricket team’s visit to Buckingham Palace a 3 News sports item broadcast on 3 June 1999 beginning at 6. 00pm announced "The Blackcaps bowl up at Liz and Phil’s wicket…". Mr Bernards complained to TV3 Network Services Ltd, the broadcaster, that this reference was disrespectful to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and overstepped the limits of acceptability. He sought a sharply worded warning to TV3’s management not to repeat such language. TV3 responded that the phrase was intended to be a brief, light-hearted pointer to the report coming up. It noted that the humorous reference was more than adequately balanced by the tone of the full news item. Summary A rugby coach found guilty of sexually assaulting young boys in his rugby club was described on a 3 National News item broadcast on 31 July 1998 as a "homosexual paedophile" and, according to a sports reporter on a 3 News Update item broadcast on 2 August 1998, the Gay Games contained events such as handbag throwing and the 200m dash in high heels. Calum Bennachie complained to TV3 Network Services Ltd that the description of the rugby coach implied that all paedophiles were homosexual or that all homosexuals were paedophiles, and that both implications were factually incorrect and portrayed gay and lesbian people as inherently inferior.
