SummaryThe "Bluffer’s Guide" is a regular feature of Ansett Time of Your Life. In the programme broadcast on TV3 on 26 May 1998 at 8. 00pm, it focused on cigar smoking. Mr Pester of Pahiatua complained through the Broadcasting Standards Authority to TV3 Network Services Ltd that the programme glorified cigar smoking in a manner which would be attractive to young people. He argued that TV3 had employed a deceptive programme practice because it encouraged young people to smoke cigars, and that it had failed to be mindful of the effect of the programme on children. In addition, he contended that it had contravened the Smokefree Environments Act 1990. TV3 responded that the programme, while rated G, was aimed at a mature audience. SummaryMore than 20 promotions for Lion Red beer were screened during Lion Red: The Game, broadcast on TV3 between 8. 30–9. 30pm on 6 August 1998. On GALA’s behalf, Mr Cliff Turner complained to TV3 Network Services Ltd that the broadcast breached the requirement in the standards to minimise the promotion of liquor. The guidelines to the standards, he wrote, suggested that liquor promos should not exceed one every three minutes during the full viewing period. Taking into account the titles, the supers and the Lion advertisements broadcast during the programme, TV3 upheld the complaint that incidental liquor promotion had not been minimised. The titles and the supers had since been altered, it advised, to remove the actual Lion Red logo. Summary A rugby coach found guilty of sexually assaulting young boys in his rugby club was described on a 3 National News item broadcast on 31 July 1998 as a "homosexual paedophile" and, according to a sports reporter on a 3 News Update item broadcast on 2 August 1998, the Gay Games contained events such as handbag throwing and the 200m dash in high heels. Calum Bennachie complained to TV3 Network Services Ltd that the description of the rugby coach implied that all paedophiles were homosexual or that all homosexuals were paedophiles, and that both implications were factually incorrect and portrayed gay and lesbian people as inherently inferior.
