An application by TV3 Network Services Ltd for an interim injunction failed in the High Court: CP 81/99 PDF2. 73 MB INTERIM DECISIONA number of complaints were referred to the Broadcasting Standards Authority concerning a 20/20 item entitled "Sex, Lies and Videotape" broadcast on TV3 on 28 June 1998 and a related news item broadcast on 3 News on 29 June 1998. There has been extensive correspondence between the complainants, the broadcaster and the Authority in the intervening months. On 24 March 1999, the Authority received advice from the solicitors acting for TV3 in which they noted that four of the principal complainants had alluded to the possibility of taking defamation proceedings against TV3. TV3 argued that the Authority would be severely prejudiced if the complaints were allowed to proceed under these circumstances....

Summary An incident involving a BB pistol was the subject of the lead news item on Nightline on 27 April 1999. It was reported that there had been "another school shoot-up" and that a student had been "caught up in the fury of the armed confrontation". The school’s principal had not been forthcoming when asked about the incident, according to the report. Mr Jackson, Editor of the Northland Age newspaper, complained to TV3 that its coverage of the incident was inaccurate and sensationalist and bore no relationship to the actual event which occurred. In his view, the reporter had elected to embellish the facts, despite having been given an accurate account of what had happened. SummaryMore than 20 promotions for Lion Red beer were screened during Lion Red: The Game, broadcast on TV3 between 8. 30–9. 30pm on 6 August 1998. On GALA’s behalf, Mr Cliff Turner complained to TV3 Network Services Ltd that the broadcast breached the requirement in the standards to minimise the promotion of liquor. The guidelines to the standards, he wrote, suggested that liquor promos should not exceed one every three minutes during the full viewing period. Taking into account the titles, the supers and the Lion advertisements broadcast during the programme, TV3 upheld the complaint that incidental liquor promotion had not been minimised. The titles and the supers had since been altered, it advised, to remove the actual Lion Red logo.
