Yee and The Radio Network Ltd - 1998-002

Radio i98FM breakfast programme. Hosts conducted a competition to unravel the meaning of spoken Chinese phrases. Not upheld: action taken sufficient (good taste and decency, discrimination and denigration).

Simpson and Radio New Zealand Ltd - 1998-003

Morning Report. Trailer for an item dealing with the illegal importation of the rabbit calici virus stated that comment would be heard on the subject from the Opposition; that comment included speakers for Labour and ACT New Zealand, but no other party. Not upheld (balance).

Harang and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1998-004

One Network News. Report on the Auckland City Council's decision not to provide funding for the 1998 Hero Parade was accompanied by footage which showed scenes from the 1997 parade. Not upheld (good taste and decency).

Terry and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1997-180, 1997-181, 1997-182

One Network News. Tribute from the Leader of the Labour Party on the death of Princess Diana referred to her as the mother of the future King of New Zealand; two other news items dealt with the controversy involving Judge Beattie's refusal to resign after being acquitted of dishonesty. Complaint that all three items was unbalanced. Declined to determine (balance): complaints frivolous, vexatious or trivial. Order (complainant to pay $300 costs to broadcaster). 

Green Society and Radio New Zealand Ltd - 1997-183, 1997-184

Morning Report, Checkpoint. Discussions about "green" politics on Morning Report and of the Labour Party's release of its environmental policy on Checkpoint. The Green Party complained that each programme omitted the significant views of the Green Society. It requested the material used by RN to determine the significance of views. Order (RNZ to make available the records and documents requested).

Durham and Groen and Channel Z Ltd - 1997-185, 1997-186

Channel Z breakfast show. The host and MP Pam Corkery told jokes about the Princess of Wales soon after her death. Not upheld (good taste and decency).

Barker and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1997-187

Shortland Street. Episode depicted the attempted murder of one character by another. Children's interests, violence, law and order. Not upheld.

Dawkins and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1997-188

The Ricki Lake Show. Programme showed a group of partly clad men parading in a "Hottest Hunk Calendar Search" in front of a predominantly female studio audience. Complaint that it was a demeaning and intentionally sexist contest. Not upheld (good taste and decency, discrimination and denigration).

AGCARM and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1997-189

Rubber Gloves or Green Fingers. At the conclusion of the documentary, presenter chaired a studio discussion about the issues it had raised. Complainant (who took part in the discussion) complained that it was unbalanced, that the benefits of organic farming had been expounded by denigrating traditional farming methods. Not upheld (balance).
