The codes all contain 'standards'. When the codes were in effect, these outlined what was required of broadcasters when they broadcast programmes in New Zealand. Each standard had a number of associated 'guidelines' which assisted broadcasters and the public to interpret the standards. The Radio and Free-to-Air Television Codes also included an appendix containing privacy principles, and the Free-to-Air Television Code further included an appendix containing programme classifications.
